Bug's Bleat - - GCF: Weight Loss

Volume 9, Issue 07 Friday, February 16, 2007

Hello All,

This is friendly reminder that the Daylight Saving Time (DST) period, where we move our clocks one hour ahead, has been changed for the U.S. and Canada, starting in 2007. The new DST will start on Sunday, March 11th and end on Sunday, November 4th. This is three weeks earlier at the beginning and one week later at the end, for this period, than previous years. You should keep this in mind as this date approaches and make sure that time sensitive systems that you use on a regular basis reflect this change.

Everyone should visit this website and watch the video testimony of these two men. This is possibly the most incredible story of the decade.

You can catch a better view of what's happening at the ground level by following three independent writers.
BILL ROGGIO, a former U.S. Army infantryman, has been writing about Iraq and the war on terror since 2004. He writes for several blogs, but is strategically rather than politically focused. He has embedded with the Marines in Iraq, Canadians in Afghanistan, and is back in Iraq now with the Marines operating in and around Fallujah. See www.billroggio.com
BILL ARDOLINO is an independent blogger, also embedded with the U.S. Marines in Fallujah, with plans to cover other cities. Ardolino is conservative, but he's not holding back from reporting the warts. A recent story is about corruption in the Iraqi Army.
See www.ind cjournal.com
MICHAEL YON is back in-country, traveling with the senior U.S. enlisted soldier in Iraq. I think Yon is the best American war reporter since WWII. He's another former U.S. soldier, but his political views are mixed and he's known for his unvarnished views.

Important:
This is upsetting but I thought I should pass it along. Check your driver’s license. Now you can see anyone's Driver's License on the Internet, including your own! I just searched for mine and there it was, picture and all!! Thanks Homeland Security! Where are our rights? I definitely removed mine. I suggest you do the same.

Go to the web site and check it out. Just enter your name, city and state to see if yours is on file. After your license comes on the screen, click the box marked "Please Remove". This will remove it from public viewing, but not from law enforcement.

Recipe(s) of the week - We’re sharing recipes from Shannon Voigt’s Taylor Recipe Book

Shrimp Dip - - Vickie Taylor

Ingredients:
4 ½ oz. can tiny shrimp
8 oz. sour cream
1 package Good Seasons Italian dressing mix
2 tsp. Lemon juice
8 oz. cream cheese

Method:
Wash and drain shrimp. Mix remaining ingredients in blender, add shrimp. Refrigerate at least 3 hours.

Miss Darla’s Shrimp Dip - - Linda Zimdahl
Ingredients:

1 can tiny shrimp, rinsed & drained, mashed up with a fork
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 tsp. horseradish
1 Tbsp. grated onion
1 tsp. Worcestershire
1 tsp. lemon juice
¾ cup chili sauce (Bennett’s works the best)

Method:
Combine the shrimp and cream cheese so it is smooth and not “white lumps” of cheese. Add all the other ingredients and blend well. Refrigerate. This tastes really good with Frito scoops, crackers or dip veggies.

Salsa Dip - - Diana Sellers
Ingredients:

1 can green chili’s chopped (4oz)
1 can black olives chopped (3 ¾ can)
4 green onions, chopped (white part)
¼ lb. Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
1 tomato, chopped
½ cup Italian salad dressing
¼ cup fresh cilantro

Method:
Mix all ingredients together and chill.

No Time to Retire
2/16/2007

Worldview at Work

I have a confession to make: I love to work. I live in an area of the country where many people come to retire to a life of golfing, collecting seashells, sailing on a boat. They’re all nice things in and of themselves, but I can’t imagine devoting the rest of my days to those kinds of pursuits.

Preaching the Gospel to prisoners, writing, and teaching about biblical worldview: These are things woven in the fabric of who I am. They thrill me every day.

And let me tell you, there are few greater thrills for me than teaching one hundred men and women each year in our Centurions program, a year-long intensive course designed to help Christians understand a biblical worldview and put it into action. That thrill is multiplied when I hear about Centurion graduates like John Nunnikhoven, whom I mentioned yesterday.

John’s a man after my own heart. When he retired from his job as an inn-keeper in Vermont, he decided to enroll in the Centurions program. He was enthusiastically looking forward to brushing the dust off some of the philosophy and theology books he had collected on his shelf. He had little idea just how active his retirement was about to become. While John and the other Centurions do spend a good deal of time reading over the course of the year, that learning only lays the groundwork for a full-fledged engagement of bringing a biblical worldview to bear in their own communities. In fact, as part of the course, every Centurion puts together a three-year action plan for how he or she will use what he or she has learned.

But before John could complete his action plan, opportunity knocked at the door. A Vermont state senator contacted Prison Fellowship after reading How Now Shall We Live?, the book I wrote with Nancy Pearcey. The senator loved the book and was intrigued by the idea of teaching this material to political, civic, business, and church leaders in his area. But with the senator’s busy schedule, he would need a little help. So he contacted us, and we had just the man for the job, John Nunnikhoven. The class materialized quickly. John organized it to be eight, two-hour sessions, meeting every Saturday for three months.

Soon after, another opportunity came knocking. Prison Fellowship was organizing an in-prison evangelistic crusade in Vermont through Operation Starting Line. Though John and his wife had never engaged in prison ministry before, they agreed to help. One taste of transformed lives, and John was hooked.

That experience led the Nunnikhovens to work with another couple to plant a church behind bars in a local correctional facility, to plant another church for released inmates in their own living room, and ultimately to open their home as transitional housing for three ex-prisoners.

Talk about worldview in action! John Nunnikhoven found retirement to be the most active time of his life. And oddly enough, though he has acquired a lot more books since he became a Centurion, he now has less time to read them.

Nunnikhoven is changing Vermont, but he is actually part of a continuing legacy of a man to whom all serious believers are indebted. Be sure to listen to or read “BreakPoint” all next week, when Mark Earley and I will tell you about a man whose Christian worldview literally changed the course of Western history: William Wilberforce, for whom our Forum is named.

[GCFL.net] Bathroom Funny

While carpenters were working outside the old house I had just bought, I busied myself with indoor cleaning. I had just finished washing the floor when one of the workmen asked to use the bathroom.

With dismay I looked from his muddy boots to my newly scrubbed floors. "Just a minute," I said, thinking of a quick solution. "I'll put down newspapers."

"That's all right, lady," he responded. "I'm already trained."

A mother's four-year-old daughter was attending her first performance of the Ice Capades. She was so mesmerized that she wouldn't budge from her seat even during intermission, watching the activity while the ice was cleaned.

At the end of the show, she exclaimed, "I know what I want to be when I grow up!"

The mother envisioned her on the ice in another 15 years, starring in the Ice Capades.

She was brought back to earth when the daughter continued, "I want to be a Zamboni driver!"

At last! A bumper sticker that is available for both parties.
FINALLY, someone has come out with a 100% bipartisan political bumper sticker.

The hottest selling bumper sticker comes from New York State.

"Run, Hillary, Run"

Democrats put it on the rear bumper.
Republicans put it on the front bumper.
><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>
And, another “Hillary” Joke

One sunny day in 2008, an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a park bench.

He spoke to the Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton."

The Marine replied, "Sir, Mrs. Clinton is not the President and doesn't reside here."

The old man said, "Okay," and walked away.

The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton".

The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mrs. Clinton is not the President and doesn't reside here."

The man thanked him and again walked away . . .

The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton."

The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mrs. Clinton. I've told you already several times that Mrs. Clinton is not the President and doesn't reside here. Don't you understand?"

The old man answered, "Oh, I understand you fine, I just love hearing your answer!"

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow."
...
Chill out. It’s a joke.

Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went downtown and went into a shop. I was only in there for about 5 minutes and when I came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. I went up to him and said, "Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a break"?

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a "nerd."

He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires. So I called him a "doughnut eating Gestapo."

He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

Personally, I didn't care. I came down town on the bus, and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said "Hillary in '08."

I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important to my health.

These people walk among us!!

One day I was walking down the beach with some friends when someone shouted...."Look at that dead bird!" Someone looked up at the sky and said..."where???"

They walk among us!!

While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was north because, he explained, he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, "Does the sun rise in the north?" When my brother explained that the sun rises in the east, and has for sometime, she shook her head and said, "Oh, I don't keep up with that stuff."

They Walk Among Us!!

I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call center. One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call center was open. I told him, "The number you dialed is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." He responded, "Is that Eastern or Pacific time?" Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, "Uh, Pacific" . .

They Walk Among Us!!!

My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria, when we overheard one of the administrative assistants talking about the sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the shore. She drove down in a convertible, but "didn't think she'd get sunburned because the car was moving".

They Walk Among Us!!!!

I told the girl at the steakhouse register that I wanted the half pound sirloin. She informed me they only had an 8 ounce sirloin. Not wanting to make a scene, I told her I would take the 8 ounce steak instead of the half-pounder.

They walk among us!

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car- it's designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk...

They Walk Among Us!!!!!

My friends and I were on a Pepsi run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases. The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount....

They Walk Among Us!!!!!!

I was hanging out with a friend when we saw a woman with a nose ring attached to an earring by a chain. My friend said, "Wouldn't the chain rip out every time she turned her head?" I had to explain that a person's nose and ear remain the same distance apart no matter which way the head is turned...

They Walk Among Us!!!!!!!

I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area. So I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. "Now," she asked me, "Has your plane arrived yet?"...

They Walk Among Us!!!!!!!!

While working at a pizza parlor I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time before responding. "Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.

Yep, They Walk Among Us, too!

And yes ... sadly...not only do they walk among us, they also reproduce!!!!

The Baptist Dog?

A Baptist couple felt it important to own a Baptist pet, so they went shopping.

At the kennel specializing in this particular breed, they found a dog they liked quite a lot.

When they asked the dog to fetch the Bible, he did it in a flash. When they instructed him to look up Psalm 23, he complied equally fast, using his paws with dexterity. They were impressed, purchased the animal, and went home.

That night they had friends over. They were so proud of their new Baptist dog and his major skills, they called the dog and showed him off a little.

The friends were impressed, and asked whether the dog was able to do any of the usual dog tricks as well. This stopped the couple cold, as they hadn't thought about normal tricks.

Well, they said, Let's try it out.

Once more they called the dog, and they clearly pronounced the command, "Heel "

Quick as a wink, the dog jumped up, put his paw on the man's forehead, closed his eyes in concentration, and bowed his head.

They had been deceived !

He was Pentecostal !

*How Did You Get Me?*

A speeding motorist was caught by radar from a police helicopter in the sky. An officer pulled him over and began to issue a traffic ticket.

"It seems everyone is out to get me lately. How did you know I was speeding?" the frustrated driver asked.

The police officer pointed somberly toward the sky.

"You mean," asked the motorist, "that I'm not just being paranoid? Even *He* is trying to get me?"

"I dream of making a million dollars in farming, like my father," the student replied.

"Your father made a million dollars in farming?" echoed the dean much impressed.

"No," replied the applicant. "But he always dreamed of it."

*Robbie's Move*

Used to being the center of attention, Robbie was a little more than jealous of his new baby sister. The parents sat him down and said that now that she was getting older, the house was too small and they'd have to move.

"It's no use." Robbie said, "She's crawling good now and she'd probably just follow us."

*Mrs. Pierpoint*

A woman is worried about an older woman, a widow, who lives in the apartment next door. She hasn't heard anything from her for a few days.

So she tells her son, "I want you to go next door and see how ol' Mrs. Pierpoint is."

A few minutes later, the boy returns.

"Well, is she all right?" the mother asks.

"She's fine, but she's annoyed with you," he says.

"At me? Whatever for?"

"Well," says her son, "Mrs. Pierpoint told me it's none of your business how old she is."

Here’s another limerick about our recent New York snow and ice storm:

Outside our abode, it ain’t nice;
There’s snow on the ground and there’s ice.
But I’m snug in my house—
Just me and my spouse
And our mouse. Leave this haven? No dice!

There are many opinions as to who was the original Valentine, with the most popular theory that it was a clergyman who was executed for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome. In any event, in 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius set aside Feb. 14 to honor St. Valentine. Through the centuries, the Christian holiday became a time to exchange love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.

Diabetes prevention: 5 tips for taking control From MayoClinic.com

When it comes to type 2 diabetes — the most common type of diabetes — prevention is a big deal.

Consider the statistics. Diabetes affects nearly 21 million people in the United States and 230 million people worldwide, according to the American Diabetes Association and the International Diabetes Federation. And that number is on the rise. In the United States alone, experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expect diabetes to affect more than 48 million people by 2050.

Scary? Of course. But you don't need to become a statistic. Tweaking your lifestyle could be a big step toward diabetes prevention — and it's never too late to start. Consider the latest diabetes prevention tips from the American Diabetes Association.

Tip 1: Lose extra weight

If you're overweight, diabetes prevention may hinge on weight loss. Every pound you lose can improve your health. And you may be surprised by how much. In one study, overweight adults who lost a modest amount of weight — 5 percent to 10 percent of initial body weight — and exercised regularly reduced the risk of developing diabetes by 58 percent over three years.

To keep your weight in a healthy range, focus on permanent changes to your eating and exercise habits. Involve other family members as well. Motivate yourself by remembering the benefits of losing weight, such as a healthier heart, more energy and improved self-esteem.

Tip 2: Skip fad diets

Low-carb, high-protein or other fad diets may help you lose weight at first, but they're not likely to help you maintain a healthy weight in the long run. And by excluding or strictly limiting a particular food group, you may be giving up essential nutrients.

Instead, think variety and portion control as part of an overall healthy-eating plan. Choose healthy foods low in fat and calories, including fruits, vegetables and various lean foods from the other major food groups.

Tip 3: Get plenty of fiber

It's rough, it's tough — and it can reduce the risk of diabetes by improving your blood sugar control. And that's not all. Fiber also reduces the risk of heart disease. It can even promote weight loss by helping you feel full longer. Aim for 25 to 50 grams of fiber a day. Foods high in fiber include fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

Tip 4: Go for whole grains

Whole grains are another important piece in the diabetes-prevention puzzle. Try to make at least half your grains whole grains. Even if you've been eating white bread and baking with refined flour for years, switching to whole grains might be easier than you think. Many foods made from whole grains come ready to eat, including various breads, pasta products and ready-to-eat cereals. Look for the word "whole" on the package and among the first few items in the ingredient list. Try to choose items with at least 3 grams of fiber per serving.

Tip 5: Get more physical activity

Increasing your physical activity can help you lose weight. But even if it doesn't, it's still important to get off the couch. Whether you lose weight or not, physical activity lowers blood sugar and boosts your sensitivity to insulin — which helps keep your blood sugar within a normal range.

With your doctor's OK, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day. Take a brisk daily walk. Ride your bike. Swim laps. If you can't fit in a long workout, break it up into smaller sessions spread throughout the day. Even trading the elevator for the stairs and parking farther from your destination are steps in the right direction.

Make it a team effort

The American Diabetes Association recommends blood glucose screening for everyone at age 45. If you're overweight with one or more additional risk factors for type 2 diabetes — such as a sedentary lifestyle or a family history of diabetes — ask your doctor about earlier testing.

Also share your concerns about diabetes prevention. Your doctor will applaud your efforts to keep diabetes at bay, and perhaps offer additional suggestions based on your medical history or other factors.

Today's Message is from Becky Wofford (a Houston Albemarle employee).

Just a reminder from my Safety Meeting presentation on Cell Phone Safety -

Be aware of those driving around you, as well as your own use of a cell phone while driving. How many distractions can you handle and still keep your mind on what is happening in front of your eyes? You may have a hands-free device or speed dial, but what happens to your attention span if the conversation is an intense one? Limit your on-the-road cell phone use and save those long, intense conversations for when you only need to focus on that.

Sometimes our attempts at multi-tasking in this busy, fast paced society can get us and others in real trouble. And, as always, watch out for the drivers around you who may not be focused on the task of driving.

Made in the USA: Spoiled brats

The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence 2/3's of the citizenry just aren't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I starting thinking, ''What we are so unhappy about?''

Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter? Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job? Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state? Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter? I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all involved. Whether you are rich or poor they treat your wounds and even, if necessary, send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss. This is all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents and neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? Is this the same president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled brats safe from terrorist attacks? Is this the commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then is there the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans? Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book and do a TV special about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did â€| Insane!

Stop buying the negative venom you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad.

WE ARE THE MOST BLESSED PEOPLE ON EARTH, WE SHOULD THANK GOD SEVERAL TIMES EVERY DAY.

Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?
------------------------------

Are you concerned about the risk of getting cancer from cell phone usage? Finally, some long-term scientific studies assessing the link between cell phones and cancer have been conducted. The results are in, and I for one was surprised...

Researchers in Denmark studied 420,000 cell phone users whose cases were followed for up to 21 years. The bottom line: No evidence for an association between tumor risk and cell phone use! Read on to get the facts and figures from this and three other studies:

Sharing a Printer On a Wireless Network
-----------------------------------------

TOURBUS reader Jackie from Australia recently asked me this:

"I have a laptop with no printer attached. But I do have a wireless network in my home, and one of the desktop computers on the network has a printer. How can I print from the laptop, over the wireless network, to the printer attached to my desktop?"

Although it may seem like printing over a wireless network requires some special magic, it's really no different than printing with a regular wired network. It doesn't matter if you connect your laptop to the network hub/router in your home with a network cable, or if you use an invisible wireless beam to connect.

If one of the computers on the network has a printer attached, all of the computers on the network SHOULD be able to access it... Read on for an illustrated step-by-step guide to sharing a networked printer, on your PC or Mac!

And if you need help setting up a home network, read this:

----------------------------
Should You Hide Your SSID?
----------------------------

Chaz from Tuskegee also has concerns over wireless security:

> "I have a wireless network at home, which lets me get an internet > connection on my laptop all over the house. But I'm concerned that > neighbors or people driving by can hack into my computer. A friend > said that hiding my SSID will solve the problem. So what's a > wireless SSID, how do I hide it, and will it help?"

If you have high-speed internet service, chances are good you have a wireless router. If so, you may be sharing your internet connection (and possibly your hard drive) with strangers. Your friend who mentioned hiding the SSID meant well, but there are some drawbacks to doing that. And there are other steps to securing your wireless connect that are MUCH more important.

To learn more about the purpose and proper setting of the SSID in a wireless network, AND the three important steps you MUST take for secure wireless computing, read on...

---------------------------------------
Is Windows Genuine Advantage Spyware?
---------------------------------------

And finally, Kip, a TOURBUS reader concerned about spyware writes:

"I read in another newsletter that Microsoft's Genuine Advantage for Windows is spyware. Microsoft seems to be forcing it on me every time I try to update my system. Is this an attempt by Microsoft to poke into our private files with spyware?"

It's true some tech writers have been saying the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool is spyware, but I don't see any evidence to support such a claim. WGA is anti-piracy software from Microsoft that checks to see if users are running a legal, licensed copy of Windows XP.

But what of those claims about WGA "phoning home" your personally identifiable information to Bill Gates? Exactly what does WGA report back to Microsoft? And what should you do if WGA thinks your licensed copy is stolen goods? Here's the scoop on WGA...

Soldier Missing in Action from the Korean War is Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Korean War, have been identified and returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is U.S. Army Cpl. Jimmie L. Dorser of Springfield, Mo. He will be buried tomorrow in Lake Forest, Calif.

Representatives from the Army met with Dorser’s next-of-kin to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

Dorser was a member of I Company, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division (organized into the 31st Regimental Combat Team). The RCT was engaged against the Chinese People’s Volunteer Forces along the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea from Nov. 27-Dec. 1, 1950. The unit was forced to retreat to the south and many men were reported missing in action under the intense enemy fire.

In 2002, a joint U.S. and Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, excavated a mass grave on the eastern side of the Chosin Reservoir. The remains of five individuals were recovered.

Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from the JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in Dorser’s identification. The additional remains cannot be attributed to specific individuals at this time and will undergo further analysis.
